A Historical View of the High Relief Gold Coin
President Roosevelt himself invited Saint-Gaudens to redesign all of our American coins, specifically the United States gold coins, in 1905. What came from this redesign is the most beautiful gold coin ever created in the United States, and maybe even in the world, the 1907 $20 gold coin - colloquially known as the Double Eagle.
On the obverse side, Saint-Gaudens illustrated a beautiful and statuesque personification of Liberty walking forward with a powerful stride. Lady Liberty's robes reflect our government's roots in the idyllic beliefs of Rome and Greece's republican ideals. Liberty has a torch in her forward hand and in her back hand, an olive branch. She leads the way to freedom. This wonderful design really highlights the freedom that forms the basis of the American spirit. Wherever the beautiful Liberty goes, people are inspired by her and peace comes in her wake. Read more
2009 High Relief Gold Coin
In 2009, the Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin was released by the US Mint. With this, an ultra high relief Dougle Eagle Liberty coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gauden was finally released, despite a unsuccessful attempt in 1907.
The United States Mint can finally show the people of its great nation the painstaking detail that is showcased in the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin. Thanks to new leaps in technology, the US Mint of the 21st century devised a way to make a high relief coin available to the American public, something that wasn't possible until now.
Mint director Ed Moy gave the US Mint the guidance needed to digitally map the Saint-Gaudens coin plasters for use in this incredible coin. The Saint-Gauden sculpture received a few modern updates to reflect the times we now live in; 50 stars are now on the coin as opposed to the original 46, and "In God We Trust" was added to update the 1907 version appropriately.
Also, they added a tiny border to make the edges more consistent. 24-karat gold will go into the new 2009 coin. Compared to 90% gold or 22-karat cold, you can manipulate pure 24-karat gold much more easily, making this high relief coin simpler to make.
Coins are now entering the 21st century, thanks to the new technology utilized by the US Mint. The organization's goal is to show the peoples of its nation and the entire world what America is made of. This coin embodies everything that's great about American art - from the design to the craftsmanship, it's all American made.
